The children and the teachers at The Yellow Cottage love to stop and just appreciate how lucky we are to have such amazing natural resources as a part of our programme.  Our sustainability team led by Liesa have encouraged birds, lizards and even a friendly possum into our playground. We are also grateful to Madeleine’s Dad who built a possum box for Bingo the possum and her baby Bluey to live in. The children love watching her come out each day to eat our fruit scraps. She loves bananas. The children also have visits most days from the blue tongue lizards during meal times, they also love the fruit scraps.

We encourage the children to explore the gardens, the trees and all the creatures that habitat our amazing playground. The richness of these areas have been the passion and work of some of our very dedicated and passionate staff.

The vegetable garden is another area that brings so much joy and we are lucky to have such a dynamic and fertile space. The children work hard at looking after this area and they take pride in the things that we grow. This again needs a team of passionate educators to facilitate and lead the direction of our garden and growing.
For children, play is learning. There is no better space for kids to learn than the outdoors, and there is no better play resource than nature. These are the experiences at preschool that the children will never forget. Nature play significantly improves all aspects of child development – physical, cognitive, social and emotional. Playing outdoors grows resilience, self-confidence, initiative, creativity and more. It encourages the joy of movement; it nurtures wild imaginations, experimentation, friendships, social connections and behaviour. All the while we are building children with an understanding of sustainability and how to care for the environment and all living things.
