Our Rowing Development Programme is about to get started again for this year. Scone Grammar School (SGS) has been running this programme for a few years now. It has become so popular that we are looking for volunteer help with our weekly rowing training.

Our SGS Rowing Development Programme is designed to develop rowing skills among our Secondary School students (both girls and boys) from Year 7 upwards and to teach the art of rowing to students who haven’t rowed before.

Each Tuesday, our students depart (SGS) at 1pm for rowing training at Lake Glenbawn and they return to School by 5pm. Our SGS Rowing Shed is located out at Lake Glenbawn and rowing coaches, Mrs Chris Brennan and Mr Nick Price are usually out on the water with the students. It would be a great help for them to have someone to supervise and co-ordinate students on the bank of the dam. Given the lowering dam levels, we also need help carrying boats between our Rowing Shed and the water.

We participate in regional regattas from Berry Park, Morpeth, Manning River Taree and SIRC (the Sydney Olympic Rowing Course) and the season runs from September to March. However we have already started training and will effectively train for the whole calendar year. Students are currently learning to row in quads, doubles and single sculls.

Our facilities at our School Gym are also growing, with ergo machines in our gym where our students usually train one lunch hour each week. Rowing is a great sport for developing strength and cardiovascular fitness, but also for teamwork and enjoying the great outdoors.

Please let us know if you’re able to volunteer on a Tuesday afternoon to help with our rowing squads. It doesn’t have to be every week. A Working with Children Check will also be necessary. Contact Chris Brennan, cbrennan@sgs.nsw.edu.au or via SGS on 6545 3131.
