Learning through Play is an effective approach to learning throughout Kindergarten. Our Kindergarten teachers, Miss Jessica Southwell and Mrs Julie Jones have trained in the Walker Learning Method. Mrs Jones and Miss Southwell spend time understanding the interests of each student in Kindergarten.
They plan the Intentional Learning through Play for their classes to make links between the explicitly taught Curriculum and their students’ interests. The result ensures we’re teaching required Curriculum with our Kindergarten students’ buy-in right from the get-go, in a way that interests and engages them.
Our small class sizes with a maximum of 18 students per class intensify this learning. It’s innovative, interest-based and it works. The transition from play based learning at Preschool is a more organic approach that flows and grows rather than abruptly changing their learning environment.
Here are some examples of Learning through Play with Intention.
• Maths uses materials to solve problems.
• Dramatic Play uses money and social skills to play. In this case, flowers and pizza were the united choice between the girls and boys in our classes.
• Collage helps to explore different styles of art and artists.
• Construction and Tinkering help to identify the differences between 2D and 3D.
• Sensory uses measurement and formal methods for understanding volume.
• Writing helps to compose simple texts through a fun, hands on approach.
