At Scone Grammar School we offer Music from Year 7-12. All students in Year 7 & 8 do a semester of music each year.

In Year 7 students work on developing their aural skills looking at some different and unusual styles of music. They also expand on their guitar and keyboard skills.

In Year 8 a more contextual approach is taken where the students focus on the topics Rock Music and Film Music. Students get the chance to put together a Rock Band and try composing Film Music as part of the course.

In Year 9 & 10 elective Music students focus on many different styles of Music. The topics we cover include: Jazz, Australian Art Music, Musicals, World Music, Baroque/Classical/Romantic Music and Rock. Students at this level should be focussed on developing skills on a chosen instrument or voice.

In Year 11 & 12 we offer both Music 1 and Music 2/Extension HSC courses. We have a proud record of some outstanding HSC results in music with many students achieving Band 5 and Band 6 results in the HSC, including HSC Encore Nominees. Students who study elective music at Scone Grammar School are given the opportunity to participate in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra “Meet The Music” programme where they travel to Sydney each term to see a live performance at the Sydney Opera House. When the topic Musicals is studied all elective students will also be able to attend a performance of a major musical production.

We offer a broad range of co-curricular music activities in the secondary school. The activities are run during lunchtimes or as part of the after-school programme. We currently offer Senior Choir, Senior Jazz Band, Junior Band and Chapel bands. All our Secondary Ensembles compete in the local Eisteddfod and showcase their talents at many school and community events throughout the year.

The Music and Drama departments present a Musical every two years.

In 2014 we presented The Wiz, a contemporary adaptation of the Wizard of Oz. Every alternate year as part of the School inter-house competition we hold a House Music Festival where each house presents three items to be adjudicated on. This is a fiercely competitive event and a whole lot of fun! In 2016 we will be performing the musical ‘All Shook Up’.

At Scone Grammar School, our Music Department is supported by instrumental teachers from the Upper Hunter Conservatorium who can provide private instrumental tuition on most instruments here at School.
